DaVinci – “What You Finna Do” (Prod. By Al Jieh) Video
DaVinci’s The Day The Turf Stood Still is out today. Peace to Sweetbreads Creative Collective.
Shot in black and white and featuring powerful visuals throughout, DaVinci uses the video as a means to drive home the song’s message as he speaks on the powerful and hotly debated topic of gentrification, an issue not only affecting his own neighborhood but urban areas across the country. Speaking on his inspirations for penning the song, DaVinci explains, “I was inspired to write this song to address an open ended question to the neglected inner-city communities world wide.” The video’s chilling depiction follows DaVinci through his home city, or at least the city that used to feel like home.

Rozewood – “Embryo” Free Download
Born in Germany & raised in Amityville NY, Rozewood witnessed the murder of his uncle first hand, and committed himself to finding his own path, away from street life.
Rozewood is the MC’s MC . As most up and coming rappers have he has been influenced by the greats like Rakim, Kool G Rap, De la Soul, Jay-Z, Nas and the Wu-Tang Clan. His intellect and sharp wit are clearly heard in his deadly freestyling abilities. In fact while in college he battled Mos Def to a draw.
There is an honesty in his music that is rare in mainstream hip hop today. He has an uncanny ability to paint an accurate picture of the pain, passion and struggle that is real life. There is no need to exaggerate. The truth is raw enough.

“To Be Young, Gifted, and Black” – Soul Portraits by Corrado Grilli
These pictures are amazing. It makes me feel like I’m looking at huge constellations in the sky. Each one of these people deserve to be immortalized in this way. They’ve made music that has changed lives on the deepest of levels. None are or were perfect, but through their music, it seemed many of them tried to use their talents to show their just as human as all of us. And in the process blessed us with rhythms, songs, chords, notes and energy that could feed the soul. I tip my hat to each one.
I’ll let Corrado Grilli tell you why he did this:
This is a personal project made to pay a tribute to the best music ever. The portraits represent Otis Redding, Michael Jackson, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Donny Hathaway, Curtis Mayfield & Sam Cooke.
Couldn’t agree more. You can go to his website to download the wall papers here. And you can do yourself an even bigger favor and study each one of these artists a little more. They all deserve a little bit of our time.

Lunch – “That’s Wussup” Free Download

When digging through emails to find something to hit you guys with today, I came across Lunch, who reminds me of a oldschool 50 Cent, meets Uncle Murda with less precision on the mic. Not to say he’s bad, charismatically the track bumps, and Lunch himself was endorsed by DJ Whoo Kid, which should speak volumes. The track was sent over as a Shade 45 exclusive, so unfortunately there’s tags. Though the production should hopefully get you past the price of entry.

Super x Chocolate Skateboards
If you’re looking to cop a pair, it’ll run you $139 USD.
SUPER has met the lifestyle mood of another brand and gave birth to new interesting collaboration: Chocolate Skateboards. Chocolate was founded in 1994 as a spin-off from Girl skateboard Company. We at Super wanted to celebrate Chocolate’s success and 15 Year Anniversary with a limited edition release of 333 special pairs of sunnies. Our common point of view on quality and the continued research of changes have made us work together with excitement for this fresh and special project.
A shade based on our Classic silhouette, characterized by the double use of two different colored acetates on the exterior and interior. Translucent grey and translucent red for the frame and same but inverted for the arms. The Chocolate written logo on the inside and the square red glass-lined one on the outside. All pieces are numbered 00/333 and come with the white box that has always distinguished SUPER’s special projects.

Long Live Sunset Studios!

clockwise from upper left: Lil PJ, Young E, Brooklyn Supergirls
Last week I finally took the leap of faith that I’d been dreaming about for a LONG time- I quit my dayjob! This means it’s all music, all day, everyday, and somehow I gotta pay rent with that. I have total confidence and have believed in my ability to do this for a while, but there was a damn good reason for holding off so long. My dayjob had some incredible perks, foremost among them being that I got to make music with kids and help them write incredible songs. For the past 4 years I’ve run a little production “studio” out of a computer room in the Sunset Park recreation center, directly in the heart of one of Brooklyn’s most diverse neighborhoods. In the early afternoon it would be the elementary and middle school kids, then after 6pm I had a steady crew of high schoolers who would come in and start writing furiously while I banged out a new beat for them.
I loved it, learned a TON from doing it, and was inspired daily, but I also found myself getting worn down and frustrated with all the other BS I had to deal with working for a City funded organization with ridiculous amounts of bureaucracy. A lot of these kids are pretty heartbroken about me bouncing, but they realize where I’m coming from, and I also plan to keep working with the ones who really take it seriously. Before I left, I finished the 3rd compilation of songs from the group (there’s tons more material that didn’t make the cut- too dirty or street for the higher up’s to stomach) but there’s some seriously classic material here. I also uploaded volumes 1 and 2 as well since the world at large needs to hear this stuff. I’m giving you a few favorites off the latest album, but download the zip files for the complete albums with artwork included. You’ll hear a tribute to garbage men, the freshest homage to Dublin Ireland ever written, and a tearjerking mom appreciation song complete with vintage vocoder hook. Much love to all my kiddies and long live SUNSET STUDIOS!
